Hopper Lounge Chair

Hopper pivots neatly into a compact packing tube with ease and efficiency. Built from half inch plywood with a leather sling, Hopper assembles in under two minutes with a single central locking bolt, making it effortless to build and comfortable to sit in. The true magic of the chair lies in its structure, where simple geometry and connection create lasting strength and comfort.

DESIGN PROCESS

Early Exploration

My first concept asked a simple question: could a single fastener lock an entire chair together? Inspired by drywall anchor screws, I explored mechanisms that transformed one tightening motion into structural rigidity.

The Cad-CNC Loop

Every working digital prototype was immediately translated into a real-world test. I set up a production rhythm:

1. Model in SolidWorks

2. Document changes in a build log

3. Generate CNC cut files and sling pattern templates

4. Cut components with CNC

5. Assemble frame and test hardware

6. Test for structural integrity, fit, and ergonomics

7. Sew and fit sling, then repeat cycle

This workflow allowed me to iterate every 3- 4 days.

Major Iterations

- Compact
- Too reclined

Model Two

Model Five

- Ergonomics improved
- Folded footprint too large

Model seven

- Mechanism successful
- Hardware failed under weight

Model nine

-Final Geometry Selected

Sling Design

Sling Geometry

After several iterations, the sling evolved into a simple rectangular form with two darted seams that cradle the user’s hips.
